Disgrace

J. M. Coetzee · 1999 CE · Novel · South African · Contemporary

A twice-divorced professor of communications in Cape Town, fifty-two and working on an opera about Byron in Italy, takes up with a student in his poetry class, and when the complaint is laid he pleads guilty to everything and refuses to perform the contrition the committee wants. Stripped of the post, he goes out to his daughter's smallholding in the Eastern Cape, where she grows flowers for the market, keeps boarding kennels, and shares the land with a neighbour who used to work for her.
