Age of Iron

J. M. Coetzee · 1990 CE · Novel · South African · Contemporary

A retired classics lecturer comes home from the oncologist with a diagnosis she cannot tell anyone, and finds a homeless alcoholic and his dog camped in the alley beside her Cape Town house. She begins a long letter to the daughter who left for America and will not come back, and the townships arrive at her door through her housekeeper's schoolboy son and his friend. Late apartheid seen from inside a white liberal conscience that knows exactly what it is worth.
