Death with Interruptions

José Saramago · 2005 CE · Novel · Portuguese · Contemporary

On New Year's Day nobody in an unnamed country dies, and the state, the church and the funeral trade each begin to panic. Death herself then decides to resume work by letter, and a cellist complicates her plan. Saramago's late fable asks what a society would do with a gift it had always asked for.
