Odes of Ricardo Reis

Fernando Pessoa · 1946 CE · Poem · Portuguese · Modernist

Short odes in a deliberately archaic Portuguese, addressed to Lydia and Chloe and Neaera, advising that the gods are indifferent, that this year's roses are the only ones anyone may count on, and that the wise course is to sit by the river and want nothing. Ricardo Reis is the heteronym Pessoa made a monarchist doctor exiled to Brazil, and gave a Latin metre and a paganism held with real conviction. Gathered as a book only after his death, out of a lifetime of odes that never stop measuring what a day is worth.
