The Keeper of Sheep
Forty-nine poems by a man who says he has never kept sheep but that his thoughts are a flock, and who proposes that the only honest response to a stone is to see a stone. Metaphysics is treated throughout as a failure of eyesight, mysticism as an illness of the understanding, and the sole religious duty as looking at things without adding anything to them. Alberto Caeiro was invented in a single standing afternoon in 1914 and made master of the other heteronyms, who are all in one way or another arguing with him.
