The Book of Disquiet
An assistant bookkeeper in a fabric warehouse on the Rua dos Douradores keeps a notebook of everything that does not happen to him: the light on the Tagus at closing time, his employer's cough, the case for preferring dreams to travel. There is no chronology and no plot, and the entries contradict one another by design, since the man writing them holds that a self is something assembled each morning out of whatever is to hand. Bernardo Soares was left in a trunk in some four hundred and fifty unnumbered fragments, and has been reassembled differently by every editor who has tried.
