The Professor's House

Willa Cather · 1925 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

The prize money for his eight-volume history of the Spanish adventurers has bought Godfrey St. Peter's family a new house, and he cannot make himself leave the bare sewing room under the roof of the old one where the work was done. His daughters have fallen out over the patent royalties left by Tom Outland, the student killed in Flanders, and the middle third of the book hands the narrative to Outland's own account of a cliff city he found on a New Mexico mesa and of what became of it. Willa Cather said she was after the effect of a Dutch interior — a crowded domestic room with a square window open on the sea.
