Fernando Pessoa · 1934 CE · Poem · Portuguese · Modernist

Forty-four short poems set out the whole Portuguese story as a heraldic device: Ulysses founding Lisbon by never having been there, the fathers and mothers of the dynasty laid out as fields on a shield, then the navigators standing at the rail of the Atlantic. The third part waits on the king who vanished in Morocco and the empire that is supposed to follow him. The only Portuguese book Pessoa published in his lifetime and the one he signed himself; it answers the epic of Camões by refusing to narrate.
