Winter in the Blood

James Welch · 1974 CE · Novel · Native American · Contemporary

An unnamed man of thirty-two goes looking, without much urgency, for the woman who left his mother's ranch in northern Montana with his rifle and his razor, drinking his way between Malta and Havre and telling strangers in bars whatever occurs to him. What the drifting circles instead are the deaths he will not describe — his father frozen in a borrow pit, his brother under a truck — and the question of who his grandfather actually was, which an old man down the road can answer. Welch's first novel, flat and dry on the surface, and the book that set a plainer register for Native fiction beside Momaday's lyric one.
