Mr. Sammler's Planet

Saul Bellow · 1970 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

Artur Sammler, who climbed out of a mass grave in Poland and sees out of one eye, walks a New York that has decided civilisation is finished, riding the uptown bus to watch a pickpocket at work. His daughter steals an Indian scientist's manuscript on colonising the moon, and the nephew who has quietly paid for everything is dying in a hospital across town. Bellow's angriest book, and the one that lost him most of the young readers Augie March had won.
