Peter Camenzind

Hermann Hesse · 1904 CE · Novel · German · Modernist

A peasant boy from a village above a Swiss lake is sent away to study, drifts through literary Zurich and Paris, and finds that neither friendship nor love will hold. Drink, and a crippled carpenter he nurses in Basel, push him back toward the mountains and his dying father. Hesse's first novel made him famous at twenty-seven and set the pattern he worked for forty years: the solitary who must leave in order to be able to return.
