The Glass Bead Game

Hermann Hesse · 1943 CE · Novel · German · Modernist

In a province set aside for the life of the mind some centuries from now, an order of celibate scholars maintains a game that draws music, mathematics and every other discipline into a single notation. A boy taken into its schools rises to be Magister Ludi, then begins to doubt whether a province that has withdrawn from history is worth defending. Written across the years of Hitler's rise and published in Switzerland in 1943; the Nobel committee named it three years later.
