Beneath the Wheel

Hermann Hesse · 1906 CE · Novel · German · Modernist

A clever boy from a small Swabian town is drilled by his father, his pastor and his headmaster through the state examination that will carry him to a theological seminary. At Maulbronn he attaches himself to a rebellious young poet, slips from the top of the class, and is sent home with his nerves in pieces. Hesse wrote it a dozen years after running away from that same seminary, and the charge against an education that consumes the child it selects has not dated.
