The Antiquary

Walter Scott · 1816 CE · Novel · English · Romantic

Jonathan Oldbuck of Monkbarns collects Roman remains that keep turning out to be nothing of the sort, and takes up with a reticent young man calling himself Lovel who will not say where he comes from. Around them a coastal parish worries about a French invasion while the Glenallan family keeps an older secret. Scott's own favourite, and the one where the antiquarian joke is aimed at himself.
