The Tale of Igor's Campaign
A minor prince of Novgorod-Seversk leads his retinue onto the Polovtsian steppe in 1185 despite a solar eclipse everyone reads as a warning, and the telling moves between the rout on the Kayala, the quarrelling princes who never came, and his wife calling to the wind and the Dnieper from the walls of Putivl. Nature answers throughout: grass wilts, the Donets speaks, birds and wolves follow the army. Known from a single manuscript that burned in the Moscow fire of 1812, its authenticity has been argued ever since; it remains the foundation stone of East Slavic literature.
