Alexander Nevsky
Novgorod's merchants would sooner pay the Teutonic Order than fight it, so the prince who beat the Swedes is called from his nets to raise a peasant army against knights in white cloaks. The battle on the frozen lake was shot in summer on glass and chalk, cut to a Prokofiev score partly written before the images existed. Commissioned as an anti-German warning, shelved for the Nazi-Soviet pact, reissued in 1941.
