Ivan the Terrible, Part I
Crowned tsar of all Russia at seventeen, Ivan announces a single state over the heads of the boyars, marries Anastasia, and takes Kazan by mining its walls. Poisoning, the desertion of his court and a staged withdrawal to a northern monastery follow, in held poses and shadows pushed to the edge of caricature. Eisenstein made it on Stalin's commission from wartime evacuation in Alma-Ata; the sequel was banned.
