An Horatian Ode upon Cromwell's Return from Ireland
Written in the weeks after Cromwell came back from the Irish campaign and before he left for Scotland, it watches a private man quit his garden, burst through his own party's ranks like lightning, and take a kingdom apart. Set against that force is the executed king on the scaffold, who did nothing common or mean and bowed his head as upon a bed. Where the balance falls between the two has been argued for three centuries, and the poem was cancelled from the folio and stayed effectively unprinted for another hundred years.
