The grand secretary of the boy emperor Wanli drives through fiscal and administrative reform against a court of rival factions in the late Ming. The novel runs to four volumes, published between 1999 and 2002, and follows his rise through its court intrigue. It won the Mao Dun Prize and is the leading historical novel of its decade in China.
