Onitsha

J. M. G. Le Clézio · 1991 CE · Novel · French · Contemporary

In 1948 twelve-year-old Fintan sails from Bordeaux with his Italian mother to a trading town on the Niger and a father he has never met, a company agent no longer welcome in the British club. Maou watches the manners of the colony and the chained prisoners on the road with open disbelief, while Geoffroy pursues a private conviction that the last queen of Meroe crossed the continent and ended here. Le Clézio took the river, the town and the crossing from the voyage he made as a boy to join his own father in eastern Nigeria.
