Brazil Red

Jean-Christophe Rufin · 2001 CE · Novel · French · Contemporary

Two orphans are taken as interpreters aboard the 1555 expedition of Villegagnon, which sets out to found a French colony in the bay of Rio de Janeiro. Among Tupinambá allies, Calvinist settlers and Portuguese rivals, they discover that the colony's ideals and its practice have little to do with one another. A historical adventure that won the Goncourt.
