English Passengers
In 1857 a Manx smuggling captain, hard up, takes a clergyman who believes the Garden of Eden lies in Van Diemen's Land aboard his cutter, while in Tasmania the Aboriginal man Peevay recounts what the settlers have done to his people. Some twenty voices tell it, from sea logs and scientific tracts to Peevay's own account. It is a comic voyage novel that darkens into a record of the Black War, and it won the 2000 Whitbread Book of the Year.
