The Prospector

J. M. G. Le Clézio · 1985 CE · Novel · French · Contemporary

Alexis grows up in a valley on Mauritius with his sister Laure until a hurricane and his father's ruin put the family out of the house, leaving him a folder of charts for the gold an unknown corsair is said to have buried on Rodrigues. Years later he sails there and lays the ravine out in survey lines and star bearings, digs season after season, breaks off for the trenches of the war in France, and comes back to the same stones. Le Clézio built the search out of his own grandfather's, which had ruined the family in fact as well as in the book.
