Cranes

Hwang Sun-wŏn · 1953 CE · Short Story · Korean · Contemporary

A security guard with the advancing southern forces recognises the tied prisoner he has been detailed to walk to headquarters: the boy he stole chestnuts with, now held as vice-chairman of the village farmers' committee. They take the road they used to take, and neither of them mentions the crane they once snared and kept hidden in the reeds until a hunting party came out from Seoul. Written while the fighting was still going on, and the most anthologised short story in Korean.
