Poèmes saturniens
Verse by a twenty-two-year-old clerk, gathered under a bad star into sections for melancholy, etchings, sad landscapes and caprices. The manner is still Baudelaire's and the Parnassians', but the ear is already the author's own: odd syllable counts, weakened rhyme, and the long sobs of the violins of autumn. Printed at his own expense and almost entirely unnoticed.
