The Dead

John Huston · 1987 CE · Film · Modern / American · Contemporary

At the Misses Morkan's Epiphany dinner in 1904 Dublin, Gabriel Conroy carves the goose and gives the toast, and a ballad sung as the party breaks up carries his wife's memory back to her girlhood in Galway. Huston directed it in a wheelchair in his last year, from a script by his son Tony, with his daughter Anjelica as Gretta, and it reached screens only after his death. A closing testament famous for its fidelity, rendering Joyce's story almost line by line.
