A Brooklyn crime family's chief enforcer, slow but reliable, sees a woman across a wedding reception and follows her to California. She turns out to be freelance in the same trade, the don's granddaughter still wants him back, and the family's balance sheet starts arguing with his marriage. Huston, near the end of his life, directed mob melodrama as deadpan farce and won his daughter an Academy Award.
