The Parliament of Fowls

Chaucer · c. 1382 CE · Poem · English · Medieval

A reader falls asleep over Cicero's account of Scipio's dream, which is not in this index, and is led by Scipio's grandfather to a gate carrying two inscriptions, one promising a well of grace and the other a tree that never bears. Past it lie the temple of Venus and a green meadow where Nature has assembled every bird on earth to choose mates, and three royal eagles all want the same one. The smaller birds, kept waiting through the courtly speeches, begin to shout.
