The House of Fame

Chaucer · c. 1380 CE · Poem · English · Medieval

A dreamer wakes inside a glass temple whose walls carry the whole story of Aeneas and Dido, walks out into a desert, and is snatched up by a talkative golden eagle who lectures him on the physics of sound all the way to the sky. Where they land, a capricious goddess hands out reputations to petitioners who have done nothing to earn them, and a whirling house of wicker leaks every rumour on earth. The poem stops mid-line as a man of great authority steps forward, and nobody knows whether Chaucer meant it to.
