On Beauty
Howard Belsey, a white English art historian at a New England college, and his African-American wife Kiki see their marriage and their three children's lives pulled in different directions by a rival professor and his family. Campus politics, class and an affair raise questions about what beauty is worth. Smith acknowledges Forster's Howards End as the model for the plot, and the novel won the Orange Prize.
