When You Are Old

W. B. Yeats · 1893 CE · Poem · English · Victorian

A woman is told to take down a certain book when she is grey and full of sleep, and to read it slowly by the fire, remembering the soft look her eyes once had. Many loved her moments of glad grace; one man loved the pilgrim soul in her and the sorrows of her changing face. A close reworking of a Ronsard sonnet to Hélène, redirected at Maud Gonne after she had refused him.
