Cathleen ni Houlihan
In a Mayo cottage in 1798 a family counts out the dowry for tomorrow's wedding while the French ships are said to be standing off Killala. A poor old woman comes in from the road, will neither eat nor sit, and speaks of her four beautiful green fields and the strangers who have taken them, and of the men who have died for love of her. Written with Lady Gregory for the Irish National Theatre with Maud Gonne in the title part; Yeats asked in old age whether it had sent men out to be shot.
