Among School Children

W. B. Yeats · 1928 CE · Poem · English · Modernist

A sixty-year-old smiling public man is walked through a convent schoolroom while a kind old nun explains the modern way of ciphering, of cutting and sewing, and the children stare at him in a moment's wonder. A tale told by a Ledaean body sends him back to a childhood the two of them seemed to have shared before the world was made, and forward to what that face must look like now. Its closing stanzas set the great-rooted blossomer and the dancer against every attempt to tell the whole from the part.
