September 1913

W. B. Yeats · 1913 CE · Poem · English · Modernist

Written while the Dublin employers had twenty thousand workers locked out and the corporation was refusing to house a gift of French paintings, it turns on shopkeepers who fumble in a greasy till and add the halfpence to the pence. Against them stand O'Leary, the Wild Geese, Edward Fitzgerald, Emmet and Wolfe Tone, men who gave away everything and were called delirious for it. The refrain has Romantic Ireland dead and gone, and in the grave with O'Leary.
