Easter, 1916

W. B. Yeats · 1916 CE · Poem · English · Modernist

Men and women he had passed with a nod at close of day, coming from counter and desk in a city of grey eighteenth-century houses, turn out to have been living another life entirely. MacDonagh, MacBride, Connolly and Pearse were shot after the rising at the General Post Office, and one of them he had thought a drunken vainglorious lout, and that one had married the woman he loved. Hearts with one purpose are a stone troubling the living stream, and the refrain grants that a terrible beauty is born.
