A Prayer for My Daughter

W. B. Yeats · 1921 CE · Poem · English · Modernist

A storm off the Atlantic howls round the tower at Ballylee while an infant sleeps half hid in her cradle, and her father walks and prays for an hour through the great gloom in his mind. He asks that she be granted beauty but not enough to make her strange, courtesy above passion, and a mind like a flourishing hidden tree rooted in one dear perpetual place. Behind the prayer stands what he believes intellectual hatred made of the most beautiful woman he had known.
