The Second Coming

W. B. Yeats · 1919 CE · Poem · English · Modernist

Written after the Great War and amid the Irish revolution, the poem opens on a falcon that can no longer hear the falconer and a world whose center will not hold. It turns to a vision of some rough beast slouching toward Bethlehem to be born. Twenty-two lines that gave the twentieth century most of its titles for catastrophe.
