Caliban upon Setebos

Robert Browning · 1864 CE · Poem · English · Victorian

Sprawled belly-down in the mud of his cave while his master sleeps, the island's creature reasons out the character of the god who made him by observing what he himself does to crabs. Setebos comes out cold, arbitrary and easily slighted on that evidence, so the safest policy is to grovel aloud and take one's pleasures quietly. Subtitled Natural Theology in the Island, it hands Shakespeare's slave a nineteenth-century argument about what a creation can be made to prove about its creator.
