Andrea del Sarto

Robert Browning · 1855 CE · Poem · English · Victorian

A painter sits with his wife's hand in his at dusk and offers her a bargain: stay quiet by the window an hour, and he will paint whatever pays for the man whistling for her at the gate. His drawing is faultless and he knows it, and he knows too that Raphael and Michelangelo reached past their grasp while he has never once missed, which is precisely what is wrong with him. Browning found the life in Vasari and the scene in a Pitti Palace portrait of the painter with his wife.
