Fra Lippo Lippi

Robert Browning · 1855 CE · Poem · English · Victorian

Picked up at midnight in a Florence back alley by the watch, a Carmelite painter talks his way clear by naming the patron who keeps him and explaining how a boy starved off the streets into a monastery learned to read faces long before he could read Latin. His quarrel with the prior is over whether flesh belongs in a fresco at all, and he makes the case for the visible world as the only thing worth putting on a wall. Browning took the life from Vasari and the argument from his own impatience with a poetry that would rather be soul than body.
