Under Ben Bulben

W. B. Yeats · 1939 CE · Poem · English · Modernist

Swear by what the sages spoke round the Mareotic Lake, and by those horsemen and women whose complexion and form prove superhuman, that man dies many times before he is buried. The instruction that follows tells Irish poets to learn their trade and sing whatever is well made, taking their measure from Quattrocento profane perfection rather than from the base-born products of base beds. It sets the place of burial at the churchyard under the mountain at Drumcliff, where Yeats's great-grandfather had been rector, and supplies the words now cut on the stone.
