The Witches

Roald Dahl · 1983 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

A boy orphaned in a car crash is raised by his Norwegian grandmother, who smokes black cigars and tells him that real witches wear wigs and gloves and hate children with a hatred he cannot picture. Convalescing at a Bournemouth hotel, he hides behind a screen in a ballroom and finds he is inside the annual meeting of every witch in England. It took the Whitbread and has been argued over ever since for making every witch a woman.
