Viracocha

Inca myth · c. 1550 CE · Myth / Legend · Andean / Quechua · Renaissance

The creator rises out of Lake Titicaca into a world without light, makes a first race that displeases him and turns them to stone, then calls the sun and the moon up out of the islands and shapes the nations one at a time from stone at Tiahuanaco. He walks north-west through the Andes as a poor bearded old man, healing and teaching and being stoned by people who do not recognize him, until he reaches the coast and goes out across the water. Andean tradition as set down by Spanish chroniclers after the conquest, in accounts already shaped by the missionaries' search for a preacher-god who had come before them.
