Quetzalcoatl
The feathered serpent of Mesoamerican myth is credited with giving people maize, the calendar and the arts, and with refusing the offering of human blood. In the Toltec cycle a rival god tricks him into drunkenness and disgrace, and he leaves his city eastward across the sea. He promised to return, and the Spanish arrival gave that promise a second life it has never quite lost.
