The Enuma Elish
Babylonian scripture · c. 1200 BCE · Scripture · Mesopotamian · Ancient
Seven tablets recited at the Babylonian new year tell how the first gods are born from the mingling of fresh and salt water, and how their noise drives the older powers to plot against them. Marduk agrees to fight the sea-mother Tiamat on condition that he be made king of the gods, and from her divided body he builds the sky and the earth. Cosmos built on the corpse of chaos.
