Theogony

Hesiod · c. 700 BCE · Poem · Greek · Ancient

The Muses on Helicon greet a shepherd with the warning that they know how to speak many lies resembling the truth, and what follows traces the gods from Chaos and Gaia through the castration of the sky, the swallowing of Rhea's children, and the ten-year war on the Titans. Threaded into the genealogy are the theft of fire, the punishment of Prometheus, and the making of the first woman. The systematic source for almost everything later Greek writers assume about the gods, and the oldest European poem to organize a pantheon as a family tree.
