The Legend of the Five Suns
Four worlds have already been made and destroyed, by jaguars, by wind, by fire and by flood, before the gods assemble in the dark at Teotihuacan and ask which of them will step into the hearth so that a fifth sun can move. Quetzalcoatl goes down to the land of the dead to carry off the bones of the earlier peoples and bleeds on them to make the people of this one. Aztec cosmology as it was written down in Nahuatl after the conquest, and the account behind the conviction that the present sun is owed a continuing debt.
