Wild Man

Gao Xingjian · 1985 CE · Play · Chinese · Contemporary

An ecologist arrives in a mountain forest to look for the ape-man the villagers say they have seen, and finds a logging quota, a drought, a marriage he is not attending to, and an old singer who still carries the region's creation epic by heart. Voices, chants and crowd scenes are staged simultaneously rather than in sequence, so the audience hears the forest argued over from several directions at once. The last of Gao's plays to reach a stage in China before he left.
