Snow in August
The illiterate woodcutter Huineng, later the Sixth Patriarch of Chan Buddhism, comes to a monastery, receives the transmission of the robe and bowl, and must flee the monks who resent it. Gao staged it as a Zen opera-play with song, speech and movement. Written in 1997 and first produced in Taipei in 2002, it is the dramatist's principal work after his Nobel Prize.
