The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Four children sent out of the London bombing to a professor's rambling house find that the back of a spare-room wardrobe opens onto a snowbound wood, a lamp-post and a faun carrying parcels. The country beyond has been held in a hundred years of winter by a queen who buys one of them with enchanted sweets. Lewis said it started from the picture of the faun and became a supposal about the Passion in another world.
